Dental Hygienist services In Bromley

Dental Hygiene

Research has shown that patients who regularly visit the hygienist suffer from fewer dental problems in the future. The frequency of visits will vary as every patient has different needs. For example, a patient who has a healthy mouth may be recommended a regular visit of every six to twelve months, where as a patient with advanced gum disease may need regular monthly visits instead.

A hygienist’s role is to prevent and treat gum disease with scaling, polishing and root planing to remove the calculus and plaque.

They can also demonstrate correct flossing and brushing techniques as well provide dietary advice and other information such as how to give up smoking.

    HEALTHY GUMS

Your gums are like cushions for your teeth; they surround the teeth in the jaws and help to support them. Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth. Red and swollen gums that bleed when you brush them could be a sign of gum disease, also known as gingivitis.
When gingivitis is left untreated it can develop further into a type of infection known as periodontitis, which affects the entire area surrounding the tooth. A result of this could be losing your tooth so it’s vital to avoid.

To keep your mouth in tip-top shape we recommend you come in for regular hygiene appointments and dental check-ups.

    FRESH BREATH

One of the most common anxieties about our own bodies is bad breath. Of course, it can be socially embarrassing, but it can also be a sign of dental or general health problems.

Bad breath is a very common problem and there are many different causes. If bits of food get stuck between the teeth or on the tongue, they will start to rot and cause an unpleasant smell. That’s why correct brushing technique, including properly cleaning the tongue, is very important in keeping your breath fresh. Strong foods including garlic and onions can also cause bad breath, as can smoking.

Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases released by the bacteria that coat your teeth and gums. That bacteria is known as plaque, and as well as an unpleasant smell plaque can cause gum disease and dental decay. That’s why regular visits to the dentist and hygienist, and good dental hygiene, are essential.

If you’re worried about your breath, our dental team can help. First we’ll rule out any medical problems, as certain illnesses including nasal and stomach conditions can also cause bad breath. Doctor Ash is medically qualified so can identify such problems and will refer you to your GP if he believes this may be the cause of your bad breath. Then we’ll diagnose any dental issues.

One of the best things you can do to improve your breath is to improve your dental hygiene. That means keeping up regular dental check-ups and hygienist appointments, and taking your dentist or hygienist’s advice on good brushing technique, including cleaning your tongue and in between your teeth. A deep clean, or scale and polish, of your teeth by the hygienist will remove stubborn plaque that can cause an unpleasant smell and can also cause further problems such as gum disease
